Generally, and this is in no way reflects on all mainstream music, I prefer that which might be considered underground.
Where commercial pressures constantly play in the minds of mainstream artists (and their record labels), underground artists are traditionally more open to "artistic freedoms".
Having said that, I'll judge something only when I've heard it, irrespective of whether it's underground or mainstream.
