It depends on what kind of installation you want.

You can format your drive and install XP, called [i]Clean Install[/i].
Which means all data would be loss, so make a backup of all your files.
This installation is recommended if your PC hasn't been formatted in a long time.
It's also recommened for systems with program issues and hardware issues.

A 2nd option is to [i]Upgrade / Install[/i].
This gives you the option to install a newer version of XP while keeping your files.
Which means your files will be untouched and intact.
You should be able to find them where they are originally located.

I usually do a clean install, since it's more reliable.
My files are always backed up on another drive so its a lot easier.
