basically to protect your page from rippers.. they will find it hard to reorganize or edit your code when you slice your images (BG) into several parts.. 
another advantage, they can't change the BG immediately..

When you view an Overlay with sliced images, the images will load simultaneously. It means that all images will load at the same time. But if you have just one whole image, it will load slower than sliced images.
