Step 1:
[/b]
Let's start out by creating a new file. I used a 300x300 pixels canvas set at 72dpi, and I filled my background with a white color. Now select the Horizontal Type Tool and set the font family to Webdings, regular, 200 pt, smooth and #00CCFF color shade. In a new text layer type 'd' which should turn into a shield shape.

Now change the font size of your Horizontal Type Tool to 180 pt and set the font color to black color shade. In a new text layer type 'd' again to get the shield design, position it on the center of your current shield design.
