It looks like Photoshop a lot put GIMPShop doesn't have the layer style window. You have to get the plug in and implement it in GIMPShop. Download the plugin here

GIMP cant use Photoshop brushes.Gladly you can use GIMPbrushes instead

anyway you can still convert photoshop brushes into gimp brushes
file name of Ps brushes is .abr
while gimp is .gbr just make ur brush an image and convert it ^^
