Microsoft had released Virtual CD-ROM Control Panel v2.0.11, a utility for Windows XP that allows you to create a virtual CD-ROM drive on your computer. This is especially helpful if you have a library of ISO images. It’s one every troubleshooter should have in their arsenal. Unlike Daemon Tools, Magic ISO and other similar programs, Microsoft Virtual CD-ROM Control Panel doesn’t need to be installed. Simply unzip and run the program, press the Drivers Control button and browse to the folder you unzipped to for the included VCdRom.sys file, install it (into the active driver system–not the hard drive), start it and you’re good to go. After that you simply mount and un-mount CD/DVD ISO images as needs be. As far as I’ve been able to discern, you can add as many drives as you have drive letters (Y:, Z:, etc.) available.
