simple. direct downloads directly gets the file from the server. server alone(without server, no downloads)
while the torrent downloads(who uses peer to peer downloads) gets the files from the server and other clients/internet user who is sharing the same exact file. those clients who shares the file are known as peers. so even without the server, you can still download the file as long as peers are available.

I can't say which of the 2 is better. direct downloads might give slight better speed than peer to peer downloads. though it depends how much do the server's bandwidth have. if many people downloading at the same time on the server, it may give you a slower speed.
while peer to peer downloads' speed depends on how much peers are available. the more peers, the more speed of downloads you get. I'm not sure of this but the speed might also increases if more people are downloading at the same time.
regarding the second question.
If i'm not mistaken, x64 is an 64 bit software, it may run more smoother on 64bit-base processors. so if your computer is not 64bit then i recommend not to download it.
my POV:
for example:
an 16bit software will run smooth on an 16bit processor. if you make it run on an 64bit processor, it won't give you a better performance because the software is designed to run in 16bit computer(It will not use your computer's full potential). so even you have a high-end computers, it won't really give you better performance on running a certain software who is designed for older processor. in other word 64x software is designed to optimize 64x processors and use its potential power. running 64 bit software on an older computer might give you bad performance. hehe , I'm not sure of this but this is something my teacher told me. you don't have to believe me.
