right click the folder which you've just created, then hit properties
choose the customize tab, click on changed icon, on the choices pick the hollow space among the icons
(or in other words 
[u]the blank part[/u]

voila 
you've made the folder invisible.
for making your program's shortcut icon invisible, do the above mentioned instruction except for the [u]choose the customize tab[/u] part
