my answer is 3
because the lights of the 3 candles died that they are not melting
while the 7 candles are continuing melting until they melted!!

Since the fire on the candles died right away, it should not be melting.
While the other 7 are still lighting up, they are melting.

for me.., the answer is 3
because, the first candle died, then when he came back 2 more candles die. so there where three candles that died. when he close the windows 7 remain alive until it melts and gone. so the 3 candles that died are the one who were left in the end..
is this right?
