I knew it, I had the right feeling. I knew God will give me an opportunity to see her again because I let her leave me without saying anything.
I stopped in front of Sam’s house and pressed the doorbell.
Kelly opened the door, “Oh, it’s you.”
“Hi,” I widened my eyes over my excitement and went in immediately.
I walked slowly, nervous to know that my eyes will be able to find her soon. The room smelled so fragrant as if they weren’t having a meeting, but a party.
I finally saw Sam and sat beside him.
“Where is she?”
He laughed, probably because I was really anxious to see her. “She’s here. Just calm down.”
“I need to talk to her,” I insisted as I dropped my eyes on the floor.
Mau, our vice pres, spanked my head with a packet, “We didn’t gather here to celebrate your thing with your ex. She’s just here to help us gather information.”
I rolled my eyes arrogantly. First off, I didn’t get here because of my interest in history. I came here to see someone. And hopefully, make things straight with her.
“Guys it’s getting late so start na tayo,” Mau yelled. Everybody went quiet and formed a big circle around the sala room.
Some people brought a projector and showed a power point about old buildings and old schools. Then Mau would just discuss things about it and everyone will give their insights about each place. I was about to fall asleep when I heard someone from behind. I turned my back and saw the same long-legged, pearl-skinned, brown-eyed lady that used to be mine.
I was taken aback by her beauty. I shook my head, embarrassed. I punched my face and gulped the air.
“This is the first place we’re gonna go to. This school is big, but once built as a hospital for the Filipinos who fought against Americans and Japanese attackers.”
Hazel stepped up front and started talking about her school. I knew I started going crazy by the time she mouthed her first words. I was mentally retarded for I never paid any of my precious attention on what she’s saying. I know it’s essential for this project, but looking at her is more essential.
“Ethan, do you agree with her?”
I glanced at them, absent minded. “W-What? Ah. I don’t know.”
“You don’t even know what we’re talking about.”
“It’s about her school,” I raised my eyebrow.
Someone hit my head, “Pwede ba? Makinig ka.” Mau hit my head again with that freaking packet and sat down.
With a smile, Hazel continued whatever it was that she’s talking about.

“Alis ka na? Sige sige. Ingat,” I gave Kelly a friendly hug and waved goodbye.
I closed the door and walked outside. I saw Hazel standing by herself.
I was about to walk towards her when Sam suddenly grabbed my arm, “Go easy on her. I’ll be back.” I was confused but I didn’t even bother thinking about it.
“Hey,” I called. “So, how are things going on lately?”
“Ethan,” she slapped my arm playfully, “You know I’m doing good. Of course I am. How about–”
“Really? I thought you didn’t want to talk to me. You didn’t even answer my calls.”
She dropped her jaw. I looked around; some of my classmates were staring at us. But when I stared back, they immediately closed the door. Well, they should.
“Why do I have to call you? I mean, we already broke up.”
“That’s not it,” I frowned, “Give me a reason why.”
She stood up and smiled, “It’s simple. I don’t love you anymore. If you want to, we can be friends.”
“Or we can make up and date again.”
“Sorry,” she walked away, “And if I have the right to say this, I didn’t go here because I wanted to clear everything between us. I came here to help Sam.”
I tried to change the topic, “So are you going home alone? I’ll go with you.”
A white car suddenly stopped in front of us. She opened the door, “No need. I got a ride from someone.”
I tried to draw a smile on my face as I stared the car from afar. Everything felt heavy inside. Even the corners of my mouth curved downwards because of the extreme gravity of sadness that occurred all over me.

I took a tight grip on my pocket and started walking my way to the train station. I checked my phone and saw fifteen miscalls from Lux. It was already 11 in the evening. If she did take it seriously, then I made her wait for three hours.
I sent a voicemail message, “Sorry I can’t go. Don’t wait for me and just go home.”
I didn’t feel guilty. Why would I feel guilty for ditching her at this kind of state? She’s not special. Despite of the painful words that Hazel gave, I still felt happy that I saw her smiles.
I wonder if there were inexplicable feelings behind those smiles that she gave me.
Only few people were there when I entered the station. I stood with the people who were besides the benches to wait for the stop.
“Roxas at 11:10. Roxas at 11:10,” the announcer said.
Everyone, including me, headed to the door. I glanced back when I saw this girl standing, holding her phone against her chest. She didn’t even take a step forward, I mean, if we were the only ‘batch’ who’ll get inside, she’ll be all alone. I got off and felt curious.
She shook her head and held on to her bag. I bet she was tired of walking–I guess–since she was barefooted and was holding her sandals on her right hand.
“Roxas at 11:10. We’re closing the doors…”
I placed my hand on her right shoulder, “Miss? Hindi ka po ba sasakay?”
She lifted her head up, tears streaming down her face. My eyes widened as I realized who it was. She immediately drew a warm smile and uttered the words, “Ah, you came.”
One question that I do not the answer rang in my head.
Lord, why did I make this girl cry?
