A 16-year-old "siomai" vendor was named grand prize winner in the first "Pilipinas Got Talent" contest held at Araneta Coliseum on June 12 and 13.
Jovit Baldovino from Rosario, Batangas sang his way into the hearts of the Filipino nation beginning with his audition piece "Faithfully" last February down to his final song "Too Much Love Will Kill You" Saturday. His soaring and searing vocal prowess has been compared to Filipino Arnel Pineda’s of American band, Journey, and has turned him into an Internet sensation.
On accepting his P2-million cash prize, Baldovino dedicated his victory to the Batanguenos, his family, his fan club and The Filipino Channel (TFC) subscribers.
"Pilipinas Got Talent" hosts Kris Aquino and Ai Ai delas Alas couldn’t help but shed tears with Baldovino, who told them early in the contest that as a child, he also sang at baptismals and birthday parties to help augment the family income. Recall that the teenager almost didn’t get to audition because he did not have enough money.
In an interview with Manila Bulletin right after passing the audition, Baldovino said his voice is "God-given."
Baldovino's runners-up were the dance groups Velasco Brothers and Baguio Metamorphosis. The top three winners were determined through text and online votes.
The rest of the finalists who battled it out for the title were guitarist Keith Clark Davila, the Ezra Band, singers Ingrid Payaket and Sherwin Baguion, multi-instrumentalist Maria Jeline Oliva, ventriloquist/puppeteer Ruther Urquia, Fil-Norwegian singer Markki Stroem, the Luntayao Family, and magician Allan "Alakim" de Paz. The non-winning finalists got P100,000 each.
The "Pilipinas Got Talent" judges were TV host-actress Kris Aquino, comedienne Ai Ai delas Alas, and former ABS-CBN president and CEO, Freddie M. Garcia.
Congratulations Jovit! I think he really deserves it. <33
