Hmmm we could have used a multi-select poll here.
There are more than just one reason.
1. Were friends/family in real life.
2. I am acquainted with that person (depends on the person).
3. I'm interested to know that person.
4. I wanna see their full profile.

Put on the poll your main idea and post your secondary ideas here...

Well as for me I discovered friendster because of my relatives are mostly on abroad or far away place... we send messages at Friendster. then comes improve YM then skype 
then comes improve YM then skype
