I think it depends on where you plug the jumper in your motherboard. Usually in the J pins (J20) and you'll have to put the HDD in the slave IDE [i](SATA can't Slave because they must have their own connections to work)[/i]. After doing the said above, you must configure the CMOS settings on Master and Slave.
I kinda fluked this one too so not that accurate, I apologize

so all HDD can be used as slave as long it is connected by IDE?

when you connect IDE to a HDD, you use the power cables and the ide cable right?
but if I want to connect SATA to a HDD, i will use the SATA Cable and power cable?

Plug SATA connector and power to SATA drives. .gif)
No master no slave. You can configured through boot setting if SATA and IDE has both have different boot (multiboot).

Well, if your CMOS settings are in auto detect. There should be any problems.
