If you were courted personally and you accepted this offer personally then I think it is reasonlable to break up with that person PERSOALLY. But if you just got in a relationship via SMS, YM, emails or phone or whatever, then I think it's ok to break up using those.
You shouldn't be scared to end a relationship if you really mean it, what's to be scared anyway?

my x-boyfriend and i broke up via sms too...
and i think it's better that way(that's in our case) though i admit it wouldn't help to fix some conflicts between you and your partner and everything would not have there proper closure...

most of my break ups are sent in sms, umm the main reaon is, its easier to deal with it rather than talking to them!!! which btw i regret lolz! so if u wanna break up with someone, try not to see them lolz! it will only be awkward!
