I was surprised when I and our manager received a call yesterday regarding the letter from PAPT(Pilipinas Anti-Piracy Team). We just received the letter today. Now we understand why the PAPT called us. Take a look:(text can be read below the photos):

According to the letter that was sent to my dad, The PAPT Enforcement against Software Policy is getting more intense PAPT is composed of OMB(Optical Media Board), PNP(Philippine National Police) and NBI(National Bureau of Investigation) 139 Businesses were raided 85 Businesses were inspected 1686 computers were seized 1144 Business were reported More raids, corporate rutine inspections and seizures are expected in 2010 To the President (our company) Subject: More PAPT raids expected in 2010; Make sure your business is using and distributing Only licensed software to avoid criminal prosecution In 2009, PAPT conducted over a hundred inspections against businesses allegedly using and selling pirated and unlicensed software in the following areas: 1. Metro Manila a. City of Manila b. Makati City c. Mandaluyong City d. Muntinlupa City e. Pasig City f. Quezon City g. San Juan City h. Taguig City 2. Cavite a. General Trias b. Rosario c. Silang 3. Batangas a. Batangas City b. Taal 4. Laguna a. Binan b. Calamba 5. Pampanga a. Clark Freeport Zone, Angeles City b. Mabalacat c. San Fernando City 6. Cebu a. Cebu city b. Lapu-Lapu c. Mandaue City As the PAPT continuously receives a good number of valuable reports on the use of pirated and unlicensed software in businesses, PAPT raids and corporate routine inspections will not stop in the above-mentioned areas. Similar enforcement activities are set to happen in more business districts across the country as the ongoing PAPT investigation processes As the PAPT swoops down in your area in 2010, make sure that your office will not be the subject of a PAPT enforcement action The PAPT raids do not aim to stifle legitimate businesses. Rather, this intensified PAPT enforcement campaign seeks to protect businesses that operate on the basis legal and fair competition. The PAPT is committed to helping create a vibrant Philippine business community to attract more investments, promote ingenuity and encourage enterpreneurship among Filipinos. We would like to remind you that the unlicensed and illegal use of software is violation of the Copyright provisions of the IP Code of the Philippines (RA 8293) and the Optical Media Act(RA 9239). Violators are subject to criminal sanctions of up to nine years imprisonment and a fine of up to 1.5 Million In view of the criminal nature of copyright infringement, using unlicensed software may result in business disruption, lost reputation and serious legal consequences for your organization. Thus, you should ensure that only original and licensed software is used in your operation. Thank you for your cooperation. Source: Letter received from PAPT to my dad's company. We are planning to buy 2 OS now. This is a lesson for us. Will you pay the 1.5 million or buy an cd? PAPT targets business. How will you know if PAPT will target our pc in our home? Don't let the law take your laptop. Are you aware of this?

Actually, I know about this since 2009. But isn't it a bit rash to post a letter regarding your company or where you work? :O_O: I'm not saying this as a bad thing but... it may jeopardize the trust and security of your company. :D Though I'm not saying this as a show-off but... why do they target large businesses? Shouldn't the PAPT hunt down the MAJOR PIRATES hiding in small business districts? They are the ones selling the pirated software right? They are the ones who gave the EU the guilt to buy it because of its cheapness. Anyway, forget that theory. :lol3: Why should they fine pirates with no money to pay 1.5m when large companies that have been tricked pay more if caught :lol3:. 1.5m sounds nice... :D

That's why I erased the name of our company in the letter :D. But now, our manager is looking for an OS for our office's pcs xD.
Though I'm not saying this as a show-off but... why do they target large businesses? Maybe it's our fault too cause we buy them and continue to use them but if there are no pirated software, we have no choice but to buy the licensed one. Another problem are the engineers who are continuously installing pirated softwares without telling us(especially when the owner of the pc doesn't know about genuine things like me when I was a child). If they will tell us that we should buy licensed software, we will buy it and it will be stucked to our mind that we should buy licensed softwares. I think they also target small business like Internet Cafes(not sure).

oh.. well i think it's hard to stop piracy cause there are so many pirated software in the internet including OS that are available to download and can be burned easily. Like sir Ephemeral said, they should raid the shops that are selling pirated softwares.

Unfortunately, the companies being ripped-off need compensation for their pirated software, that's why they only target and raid large or legitimate companies/businesses and big shots who makes the money cut in their quota. Well... being business oriented. That's my point of view. :D Why hunt down the small piracy shops who sells probably 10k to 20k a day than graphic designing companies that rakes in probably 50k to 100k a day...? specially this election season. :lol3:

i do not believe PAPT can stop piracy! this was an issue long time ago but piracy keeps on increasing not only here in the Philippines. there are also mobile selling piracy not only softwares, it includes video cds dvds and etc.

My solution about this is switch to open source software. PAPT's efforts is nothing more than a waste of taxpayer's money.
