Ratings For Period Ended July 28, 2008 @ReversEdge Thanks for posting in my thread, bro. Glad to see some boxing fans are finally coming out of the shadows.
pacman vs de la hoya is ridiculous. I dunno what freddie said to manny that makes him convince he can knock oscar. He won't make it, i saw him fighting slower in lightweight and surely moving to welterweight is suicidal.
I will agree with you that maybe Manny should not be quite so convinced that he can beat De La Hoya (although it's a boxer's instinct to feel that he can beat anyone, which fuels success usually) but I have to strongly disagree with you that Manny was fighting slower in lightweight. On the contrary, I thought Manny looked extremely fast (no loss of speed) and extremely good in the David Diaz fight. David Diaz is a damn good boxer but was overwhelmed by Manny's speed and power. The cuts that Diaz suffered were more from the speed than the power of Pacquiao (although it was certainly a combination of both). My final thoughts after the Pacquiao-Diaz figher was that I thought Manny looked just as good (if not better) as he did 5 years ago. My main concern is him taking a 2 weight class jump in just a few short months to battle Oscar. I can't say that this match is a "suicidal" move for Manny, but it's gonna be a hard fight, likely the most difficult of his career and probably will be a reality check for him. He did surprise me against Diaz, though, so maybe he'll surprise me again. I'm a huge fan of Pacman, he's my favorite boxer, but I am concerned about a fight against De La Hoya. Thank you, also, for posting in my thread. Teron spoke about fighting premium TV giant for the first time, his knowledge of his opponent Michael Lozada, and where he rates himself amongst the best at 135. How excited are you about being on a major television network in Showtime for the first time? I'm excited to be on Showtime for the first time. So many great fighters have fought on Showtime, including one of my idols, Diego Corrales. I'm very thankful to Showtime because I know that they only put great fighters on their network. I promise to put on the best show that I can and put all of my skills on display August 1 so they will invite me back in the future, hopefully when I fight for a world title. What do you know about your opponent Michael Lozada? I saw some tapes and know that he is a really tough fighter that comes forward and throws a lot of hard punches. I also know that he represents a very tough challenge, but one that I am looking forward to. In all, I respect his skills and I have to be very focused for this fight. Any worries on the fact that Lozada has been in with likes of unbeaten world champion Edwin Valero and former world title challenger Jose Armando Santa Cruz? No. That is the reason I am excited to be in the ring against him. He has been in with some world class opposition. I have to beat Michael Lozada and look good doing it in order to move forward. You have a major height and reach advantage over Lozada, so are you planning to fight him from a distance? Using my height and reach advantage is always my number one priority in a fight, which is what my trainer Mark Breland wants me to do. I tend to get away from it sometimes, but that is always the plan that I go in with. Bouts between Puerto Rican and Mexican fighters have produced great fights not only in the past but within the last week. Do you anticipate the same with this fight with you being Puerto Rican and Lozada being Mexican? I agree. Puerto Rican and Mexican fighters have produced so many great fights. I know how important the support of my Puerto Rican fans is to me. The best way for me to show gratitude for that support is to give them a great, exciting victory. Lozada is coming from and representing Mexico, and I'm sure that he does not want to disappoint his fans. So, yes I anticipate that this fight will continue the great tradition of Puerto Rican and Mexican fighters and result in a great fight. You are already ranked #7 in the world by the WBO. With a successful victory do you feel you are ready to battle the elite at 135? With a victory I expect to move up in the WBO ratings as well as the WBA and WBC where I'm currently ranked, as well. I feel that I'm ready for the elite at lightweight, but I will leave that up to my manager Steven Heid and my promoter Hirsch Borao Promotions. Any final thoughts? I just want to thank my fans for their support and Showtime for the opportunity, my trainer Mark Breland, my manager Steven Heid, and my promoters Mike Borao and Scott Hirsch (Hirsch/Borao Promotions). I have a great team and feel unstoppable.
IBF Junior Bantamweight Championship--Saturday, August 2, 2008
Dimitri KIRILOV 29-3-1, 9 KO vs Vic DARCHINYAN 29-1-1, 23 KO ** KIRILOV became IBF Super Flyweight Champion with a unanimous decision over former U.S. Olympian Jose Navarro on October 13, 2007. The Russian has since made one successful defense against Cecilio Santos on Feb. 28, 2008. Trained by Hall Of Famer Freddie Roach, KIRILOV'S strong defense and solid chin will make him a perfect match against the knockout obsessed DARCHINYAN. STYLE  A talented boxer with tremendous speed, KIRILOV has the ability to outbox his competition...He has quick hands and will consistently out work and wear down his opponents. STRENGTHS  Has a solid chin and can sustain a flurry of punches...Possesses great stamina...Has the ability to go the distance with every opponent...Has never been knocked out. WEAKNESSES  Lacks knockout power (with 9 KO's on his resume)...Has had trouble fighting outside of Russia, where all 3 of his losses have occurred...Has fought just twice in the U.S. ** From Dec. 15, 2004 until July 7, 2007, DARCHINYAN reeked havoc on the Flyweight Division with six successful defenses of his IBF title. DARCHINYAN was shocked by Nonito Donaire last year when he lost the coveted strap by 5th-Round KO to the heavy underdog. Since then, "Raging Bull" has moved up to Super Flyweight and is undefeated. STYLE  Nicknamed "Raging Bull" because of his aggressive and unorthodox fighting style...Can seem to be out of control in the ring...Always looking for a knockout punch with 23 of his 29 victories coming by KO. STRENGTHS  Has an aggressive style and tremendous punching power...A great body puncher...At his best, he maintains a busy pace and constantly pressures opponents...Tough and very quick. WEAKNESSES  Lacks polished skills, tends to brawl...Tends to throw single punches and always looks for the knockout.
IBF Welterweight Title Fight--Saturday, August 2, 2008
Zab Judah 36-5-0, 25 KO vs Joshua Clottey 34-2-0, 20 KO Last week, the Miguel Cotto vs Antonio Margarito fight determined the top dog in the welterweight division. Antonio Margarito wore down and knocked out Miguel Cotto, who was widely considered the best welterweight in the world prior to the bout. The result gives us answers but raises more questions. A Miguel Cotto win would have locked him into the top spot in the division, securing his place as one of the best fighters in the world. However, Antonio Margarito has a recent loss to Paul Williams, another top welterweight. He also has a previous close fight with none other than Joshua Clottey. So while his win over Cotto vaults him into the number one ranking, there are rematches and other interesting fights looming ahead in Margarito's future. This weekend, Zab JUDAH will battle it out against Joshua CLOTTEY for the IBF Welterweight strap, the belt that Antonio Margarito gave up for the right to face Cotto. (For full disclosure, promoter Bob Arum, who promotes Cotto, Margarito and Clottey, made Margarito give up the belt. Rather than unifying the division in one swing, he hopes for CLOTTEY to win the belt, setting up yet another welterweight clash of titleholders that he promotes: Margarito vs CLOTTEY). I would say this is a make or break fight, but in boxing these days, there doesn't seem to be any. If so, Zab JUDAH would long since be "broken" and out of the limelight. Zab JUDAH has had a string of win or go home fights, all of which he has lost; and yet, here he still is, in the main event of another HBO card. (He was supposed to fight Shane Mosley, both coming off their respective losses to Miguel Cotto, before suffering a suspicious laceration to his arm. He claimed to have fallen through a glass shower door). JUDAH lost his title to unheralded long shot Carlos Baldomir. Yet, he still got his shot at pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather (who is now theoretically retired) because the fight was already signed. He redeemed himself against Mayweather by gaining an early lead in the fight and... inciting a riot in the ring by fouling Mayweather purposefully. This led to his suspension from boxing for a year, after which he still managed to land the Miguel Cotto fight. Here, even in losing, JUDAH finally and legitimately redeemed himself by showing some measure of heart, effort and focus. All of which seem like standard pugilistic qualities but for Zab, are minor miracles. He has won twice in his last two fights, but against extremely average competition. Zab JUDAH has blinding hand speed and explosive power, but he has been continually undone by his mental implosions both in and out of the ring. His career to this point is defined by dazzling potential and flashes of brilliance, but most importantly, by continuous shortcomings. While his career won't be over if he loses this fight, he will forever move down a rung. No longer a headliner or a contender, he will be a fulltime trial horse and gatekeeper, the man everybody has to (and does) beat to go on to bigger and better things. Joshua CLOTTEY is on the other end of his career arc. While JUDAH is on the downside, attempting to climb back up for another title reign, CLOTTEY has never reached that mountaintop. CLOTTEY is a relative unknown to many boxing fans, only appearing on nationally televised fights in his last few times out. He had one previous shot at the title, against newly crowned welterweight king, Antonio Margarito. It was a fight he was winning handily until the 4th or 5th round when unfortunately and ironically, he broke his hands. Margarito came back and won the fight by decision to retain his title belt. The only other loss on CLOTTEY'S record came from JUDAH conqueror Carlos Baldomir. However, it was a fight he was also winning clearly until being disqualified. CLOTTEY is a very different stylistic fighter than his opponent this weekend, Zab JUDAH. Where JUDAH has lightning fast hand speed, CLOTTEY has strong fundamentals and boxing technique. JUDAH can be absolutely mind-boggling with his ups and downs, while CLOTTEY is steady and consistent. Zab is never out of a fight with his ability to turn everything around with one punch, as opposed to CLOTTEY who can only hope to wear his opponent down over time with pressure and work rate. Perhaps their one common ground is the willingness to foul - intentionally and repeatedly - setting the stage for a prospectively foul filled evening. **RELATED** -----Clottey: I Will Destroy Zab!----- IBF #1 rated welterweight Joshua Clottey of Accra, Ghana, today said he will "...destroy Judah, way worse than how Cotto did it last year." Judah, a former undisputed world weltweight champion who has been in 15 world title bouts, shrugged it off. "I'm on a much higher skill level than he is," said Judah. Judah vs. Clottey is this Saturday, August 2, at the Palms Hotel-Casino in Las Vegas. The new welterweight king, 'Tijuana Tornado' Antonio Margarito, will be at ringside. Clottey said he plans to pressure Judah, back him up, and attack at all times."Just the way Margarito fights," said Clottey, "and after beating Judah, I want to go into the ring again against Margarito." Clottey battled Margarito for 12 rounds in December, 2006 in Atlantic City, N.J. "I pounded on him, then hurt my right hand, then my left," Clottey said. "I was hurt but I refused to quit. I went the full 12 rounds." First, however, Clottey must deal with Judah. Bob Arum of Top Rank says Clottey vs. Judah is a scorcher. "The welterweight division is the hottest in boxing today," Arum said. Judah vs. Clottey for the vacant IBF Welterweight Championship will be broadcast on HBO After Dark. The Friday weigh-in (open to the public) will be at 4 pm on the Ballroom Level at the Palms Hotel-Casino. First Bell on Saturday will be at 4:30 pm. Judah vs. Clottey will go into the ring 7:30 pm.
WBA Heavyweight Title Fight--Saturday, August 30, 2008
Nikolai VALUEV 48-1-0, 34 KO vs John RUIZ 43-7-1, 29 KO Valuev-Ruiz II Nikolai VALUEV (48-1, 34 KOs) will fight John RUIZ for the vacant WBA heavyweight title in Berlin on August 30, it was revealed today. Team Sauerland won the purse bid in Panama with an offer of $2.100.000, edging out Universum by $100.000 ($2.000.000). “I am happy my team won and that the fight will be staged in Germany,” the Russian Giant said from his home in St. Petersburg. “Berlin is very special to me. That is where I defeated RUIZ in 2005 to become world champion. Fighting in the Max-Schmeling-Halle again will be like a home match..” After Ruslan Chagaev had pulled out of his mandatory defence against VALUEV for the second time in a row, the WBA set up the clash between RUIZ (43-7, 29 KOs) and the Russian Giant, the two top-ranked challengers. “Nikolai is eager to win back his title,” Sauerland managing director Chris Meyer said. “He has gone through the full preparation twice and can´t wait to get back into the ring.” Back in December 2005, VALUEV became the tallest and biggest boxing champion of all time when he closely edged RUIZ on points. Meyer is confident the 34-year-old Russian can do the same trick again. “Nikolai has improved a lot under the guidance of his new coach Alexander Zimin,” he stated. “I am sure he will beat RUIZ.”
Pacquiao-De La Hoya Update!
Hall-of-Fame promoter Bob Arum said there is no reason to hurry things up in sealing a deal for Manny Pacquiao's next fight. Interviewed by "Sports Chat" Tuesday morning Arum said Pacquiao and his family will stay in Las Vegas for a few days and in between, talks will commence to determine the Filipino four-division champion's opponent. "Hopefully that will result in a plan if he wants to go with the De La Hoya fight. I'll contact Richard Schaefer and will start that negotiations," said Arum "It's gonna take maybe a week or so, but there's no reason for undue haste. It's a very important decision for Manny's career. A lot of money involved and we're gonna go slowly." In a recent get together with writers and editors of Philippine sports last week Pacquiao revealed his readiness in becoming the farewell opponent of Oscar De La Hoya, acknowledged as the top superstar of the sport. "It's an honor to fight a legend like De La Hoya. If this fight pushes through, I will give my very best in preparing for this fight," said Pacquiao. "I believe Freddie when he said I can beat De La Hoya. Freddie once trained De La Hoya so he knows the strengths and weaknesses of De La Hoya."Arum said Pacquiao was set to arrive yesterday in Los Angeles and will have the Filipino star board a private jet from the Santa Monica airport to fly to Las Vegas. Though Pacquiao seemed eager to face De La Hoya in an intriguing but highly-anticipated bout, Arum said everything depends on what decision will the Mexican-American poster boy takes. Arum also talked about his plans for super bantamweight prospect Bernabe Concepcion ands world flyweight champion Nonito Donaire, Jr.
Taylor-Lacy back on!
Jim Wilkes, Jeff Lacy's attorney and adviser, has confirmed to St. Peterburg Times boxing writer John Cotey that Lacy will return to the ring against Jermain Taylor on November 15. "I'm telling you, as Jeff's attorney, a deal has been reached," Wilkes said. "It took a lot of work, a lot of effort, a lot of discussion, but we got it done."
^ ^  Yeah, you're right....it's all about the money. I mean, I can't hate Manny for wanting to get the biggest paycheck of his life (win or lose), but if Manny does go for it and he gets beat down badly, will he ever come back from it? Oscar has a lot of power, too, and he's damn fast.

Thank you, also, for posting in my thread.
no your wrong dude, if you carefully watch the bout, you can clearly see and count manny pacquiao's landed punches while comparing his featherweight bouts, it is hard to determine how many punches landed everytime he starting to use combo. and if you notice pacquiao during his fight with diaz, he barely move side to side which is something he usually do with his previews fights. what he did during that night was just standing in front of diaz and throw flury of punches and this is something that shows manny really was losing his agileness. just because diaz was rock hard by pacquiao doesn't mean pacquiao still have that speed. only that diaz ain't moving well and is not capable of dodging and countering pacquiao's punches. and Diaz ain't that good as Marquez and considering the way he fight, surely a slugger like manny can do what manny did to diaz. theres no way you won't loss any speed after adding weight, not unless your body is comfortable with the weight. in the case of manny, moving to 135lbs is not a problem, it is confirmed that manny is comfortable with 135lbs.he still have that power but the speed is slightly different this time though it is barely noticeable. gaining the same speed at 135lbs is also not a problem, manny just need to fight couple of lightweight bouts and surely he will gain the speed he have during his featherweight reign (just like he did when he moves to super-featherweight). for me jumping to 147 is already a different story. I dunno why manny change his mind and wants to fight in welterweight while when he was interviewed after the fight w/ diaz he refuses to fight 147. I really want manny to win this fight but my brain says this is something not acceptable to the nature of boxing (you know a former flyweight fighting a welterweight). :wallbash: I hope manny prove i'm wrong. BTW don't use highlighted video when comparing. that thing won't show you the actual speed. peace

Your welcome bhebhiej:) Btw, are anyone watched the fight between Nonito Donaire VS Vic Darchinyan?! This fight is one of favorite hahaha what a punch by Donaire. He's also a Filipino boxer one of my favorite aside from Pacman. Here I got some of their images,

As far as I observed, Donaire is more strategic than Pacman! His timing and momentum is really fantastic He's not like Pacman that most of the time, he's so aggressive huhuhu but the people love him because of his aggressiveness and his determination to win hahahaha that's a real fighter

Now, you make some good and valid points, but still, in my opinion Manny looked just as good at lightweight as he did in featherweight. **No offense, by the way.**
theres no way you won't loss any speed after adding weight, not unless your body is comfortable with the weight. in the case of manny, moving to 135lbs is not a problem, it is confirmed that manny is comfortable with 135lbs.he still have that power but the speed is slightly different this time though it is barely noticeable.
So with what you're saying there, you are in a way contradicting yourself. How do you or me or anybody know that Manny will or will not be comfortable at 147? You also state (after telling me how wrong I am) that in your opinion Manny's "loss of speed was barely noticeable.
for me jumping to 147 is already a different story.
I agree that it's an area concern. Just as I've posted, that I am worried about Manny, my fave boxer, jumping 2 weight classes to face Oscar De La Hoya, another boxer destined to be a Hall of Famer. I will say that Manny definitely has been working on the technical aspect of boxing. He didn't look like the slugger, brawler against Diaz that he is known for. This will help in a possible fight against De La Hoya.
As far as I observed, Donaire is more strategic than Pacman!
Yeah, I agree. Donaire is more strategic than Pacquiao.
cool list bro! i want to see a paul williams vs margarito rematch.. to see if paul williams really belong to p4p list.. to prove himself :P he should knock out margito :D :P :paranoid: :ninja:
Thanks, bro. Yeah, I want to see Williams fight Margarito again, too. Even if he can't get a KO against Margarito. Just a decisive win against Margarito will ensure that he (Williams) stays on my list of Pound For Pound.
So with what you're saying there, you are in a way contradicting yourself.
indeed my statement there was contradicting myself but my point was even manny was comfortable on lightweight, his speed was still affected. He is not yet use to 135lbs and couple of fight is needed to have 100% of his speed. i saw a different manny that time, he was not doing side/in-out movement which something he use to get an opening (I doubt he is losing his stamina). he was brawling diaz even though diaz ain't fighting back. thats what i saw and he was not fighting technically like what he did during his bout against marquez. he just throw consecutive punches that diaz was enable to cope up.

The only problem with that, from Bob Arum's side, though, is that it's a big big big money fight and Oscar is getting "old" (in boxing terms) and wants to retire. For him to wait for Manny to take a couple more fights at lightweight would mean having to postpone his retirement until somewhere around the end of 2009 or early 2010. Oscar probably is not gonna wait that long. Although he is still a very skilled and great fighter, Oscar's overall skills and ability have begun to decline. So if they want that payday, they gotta jump on it now.
bro bhebhiej do you know how tall pernell whitaker is? is he only 5'6???
I don't know his exact height, but I know I'm taller than he is. I have met Sweet Pea, personally. He's from my hometown. I worked in his house back when I used to do construction work. Also, I used to work for a local radio station back in Norfolk, VA and since Sweet Pea is a "local celebrity" he was often at events hosted by the station. He used to be one of my favorite boxers until he got caught up in the cocaine scandals. Anyway, I even have a couple pictures of me and Pernell standing side by side and if I can find the disk that it's on, I'll post it in here. I'm 5-8, and I would guess that he's an inch or two shorter than I am. So yeah, 5-6 sounds about right. A lot of people think he's tall. Hey, good video that you posted too, bro. :D Wow, talk about way back in the day.

@niknok Actually, in the Whitaker-De La Hoya fight, Oscar won by unanimous decision, although it was disputed. Whitaker even knocked De La Hoya down in that fight but he spent more time defending himself and wasn't able to get a real offensive going against Oscar. I remember watching that fight and I thought that Whitaker should have one it, but the judges didn't see it that way, unfortunately. He eventually retired in 2001 (I think) after breaking his collar bone (I think, but don't remember for sure) early in a fight. He is now a boxing trainer in Virginia. He used to (not sure if he still does) train heavyweight Calvin Brock. And keep those classic vids coming in. =) I enjoyed watching that last one you posted. A little news....I know this is kinda late now, but Zab Judah lost his fight against Joshua Clottey last week. I'll update all the other fights later, too, and post the link to the new rankings, also. Personally, I know that Zab Judah seems to always find a way to a big match-up despite all the flaws in his career, but this time, unfortunately, I think he's done. Joshua Clottey is a damn good fighter, but Zab has so much more skill than Clottey and he should have been able to do better. I thought Judah looked "okay" for the first 2 rounds, but after that....it was all Clottey. Zab Judah is going to be remembered as a disappointment, an under-achiever, and a man who should have made it into the boxing hall of fame. I doubt he'll ever be inducted, though.
